About Us

When Susan and Ian Law first formed MATCHLESS White Dorpers in 2003, they soon realised that the pool of genetics available in Australia was extremely limited.   They therefore decided to form joint ventures with South African producers who would source top quality genetics for importation to Australia.  Over the past 6 years they have regularly imported and implanted embryos from superior South African genetic stock As a result, their herd represents a wide range of genetics, different to most Australian flocks.   Through careful selection and natural joining they have interwoven these genetics into their herd, with the objective of producing sheep which are structurally sound, meaty, which shed well and are particularly fertile.

The Laws are keen to exploit and promote the natural hardiness and adaptability of the White Dorpers.  To this end, they moved their animals to Narroogal, a 3000 acre farm just south of Wellington, NSW.   There the sheep are run on acreage which ranges from river flats to high, rugged hills.

Susan and Ian continually monitor their animals and engage in ongoing selection, in order to be sure that they are chosing their best animals for breeding and for sale.   They base their selection on various criteria:

  • Their sheep are paddock-reared and have to thrive with minimum input.
  • Animals with structural faults are culled immediately
  • Since White Dorpers were designed to produce meat, they must clearly demonstrate their meat-making capacity through superior muscle development and body length
  • In the Australian context, Dorper rams are most frequently used over wool-producing ewes. Most commercial breeders are keen to get the wool off the progeny, so animals are also selected for their shedding ability
  • In addition, MATCHLESS White Dorpers are required to represent the Breed Standards of the White Dorper Breed,

Susan and Ian maintain a rigorous health regime, vaccinating regularly and drenching in response to the outcome of faecal tests. All their sires and dams are Dermatosparaxis-free and the Stud is Brucellosis accredited.  They maintain meticulous records which enable them to track all aspects of the performance of their animals.

MATCHLESS White Dorper sheep exhibit the best characteristics of the breed; structural soundness, meat-making qualities, shedding ability, fertility and good mothering instincts.   In 2009 Susan and Ian anticipate that they will produce approximately 800 full blood lambs.   The animals they offer for sale provide an opportunity for purchasers to introduce new genetics into their herds, whilst at the same time enhancing the special ‘Dorper’ qualities of their flocks.

Susan and Ian have great faith in the future of White Dorpers in Australia and are proud of the animals they produce.   They welcome visitors to their farm to see their sheep and are happy to share their experience in breeding White Dorpers.
